The Highlands Bluebirds girls basketball team (20-4 overall) will be the undisputed top seed in the 36th District Tournament once again.

Highlands has not lost a district seed game since the district went to that format before the 2013-14 season. The Bluebirds finished off seed play Friday with a convincing 67-25 win over the winless Newport Ladycats (0-19). Newport's first-year head coach is 2008 Highlands graduate Alex Adler.

Highlands also clinched its seventh straight season of 20 or more wins. The Bluebirds have won 28 straight against district opponents dating back to a loss to Newport Central Catholic in the 2014 district championship game.

The Highlands starters did not play more than 10 minutes with the exception of junior Maggie Hinegardner. Junior Rylee Thomas led the Bluebirds with a career-high 13 points and a team-high five rebounds. Senior Zoie Barth finished with 12 in nine minutes, two seconds of action. Hinegardner scored nine as the Bluebirds saw 12 different players score.

Highlands led 29-5 after the first quarter and 46-9 at halftime. The Bluebirds took a 58-20 advantage into the fourth quarter.

The Bluebirds made 25-of-49 shots for 51 percent including 6-of-18 three-point tries for 33 percent and 11-of-18 free throws for 61 percent. They also won the rebounding battle, 32-19 and had 20 assists, 11 steals, one blocked shot, eight turnovers and seven fouls. Senior Chloe Jansen and junior Meghan Walz had four assists each.

Newport made 8-of-30 shots for 27 percent including 3-of-10 from three-point land for 30 percent and 6-of-11 free throws for 55 percent. The Wildcats also had two assists, four steals, no blocked shots, 13 fouls and 19 turnovers. Alexus Miller led Newport with nine points.

Highlands does not play again for another week when Dixie Heights comes to town. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
