The Highlands Bluebirds girls basketball team (14-3 overall) built a 28-10 halftime lead then held on for a 47-43 victory over the Assumption Rockets (9-8) on Friday in Louisville.

The Bluebirds saw seven different players score. Senior Ashley Hayes broke out to score 14 points to lead the way. Senior Zoie Barth and junior Piper Macke followed with nine each.

"In the first half, it really looked good. Our defense was working out really well and our offense was flowing," Macke said. "We came out a little flat in the second half and our coaches got on us for it. At the end of the game, we know what we did wrong. We needed a more focused effort with knowing what we were doing defense-wise. I got beat a couple times on defense and I know that contributed to it. There were a couple end-of-game faults that led to the score getting closer."

Highlands made 14-of-48 shots for 29 percent including 5-of-18 from three-point range for 28 percent and 14-of-21 free throws for 67 percent. The Bluebirds also had 10 assists, no blocked shots, 18 steals, 12 turnovers and 14 fouls. Barth had six assists with senior Hanna Buecker and sophomore Rory O'Hara recording four steals each.

Assumption won the rebounding battle, 28-22. Senior Chloe Jansen led the Bluebirds with seven.

Payton Cronen led Assumption's comeback attempt with 12 points. The Rockets made 16-of-32 shots for 50 percent including 2-of-7 three-point tries for 29 percent and 9-of-13 free throws for 69 percent. The Rockets also had three assists, nine steals, one blocked shot, 22 turnovers and 18 fouls.

Highlands takes on Louisville Butler in another non-region game Saturday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
