The win
over Covington Holmes on Friday loomed large in terms of the 9th Region.
But the
Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds boys basketball team followed it up with
an even bigger win Tuesday in Louisville. The sixth-ranked Thoroughbreds won
their 18th straight nipping the fourth-ranked and host Trinity Shamrocks,
45-44. Trinity (23-5) won the state championship two years ago.
The Thoroughbreds
(25-3) saw two post players lead the way. Drew McDonald had 14 points and Jake
Schulte followed with 11. NewCath also saw senior guard Tanner Moeves return
from injury.
NewCath
finishes the season Thursday at home against Conner. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
Basketball, Boys:
Scott 57, Highlands 51:
The
visiting Bluebirds (6-13) dropped the road contest.
Highlands
placed two players in double-digits. Justin Weyer led the way with 13 points
and Drew Houliston scored 10.
The
Bluebirds play host to Lloyd Memorial on Wednesday. Game time is 7 p.m.
Basketball, Girls:
Newport Central Catholic 55, Covington Holmes 39:
The
Thoroughbreds (22-4) rebounded from a tough outing Thursday with a huge 9th
Region win.
Senior
Nikki Kiernan led the way with a double-double of 28 points and 14 rebounds.
Kiernan also had two blocks and two steals.
Sarah Neace
came off the bench and made three triples on her way to nine point. She keyed a
second-quarter NewCath run that gave the Thoroughbreds a 26-19 halftime
advantage.
NewCath
travels to Ryle on Wednesday in a make-up 9th Region contest. Game time is 7:30
p.m.
