The win over Covington Holmes on Friday loomed large in terms of the 9th Region.

But the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds boys basketball team followed it up with an even bigger win Tuesday in Louisville. The sixth-ranked Thoroughbreds won their 18th straight nipping the fourth-ranked and host Trinity Shamrocks, 45-44. Trinity (23-5) won the state championship two years ago.

The Thoroughbreds (25-3) saw two post players lead the way. Drew McDonald had 14 points and Jake Schulte followed with 11. NewCath also saw senior guard Tanner Moeves return from injury.

NewCath finishes the season Thursday at home against Conner. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Sarah Neace came off the bench and made three triples on her way to nine point. She keyed a second-quarter NewCath run that gave the Thoroughbreds a 26-19 halftime advantage.
