Thursday Sports Briefs

The Highlands Bluebirds girls soccer team downed host Simon Kenton, 4-2 on Thursday in Independence.

Taylor Vaughn led Highlands (2-2-2) with two goals with Alyssa Farley and Brooklynn Rivers scoring the other two. Kristin Venneman, Rivers and Kelsey Etherton recorded assists for the Bluebirds.

The Lady Pioneers took just four shots. Highlands goalkeeper Sarah Owen saved two of them.

Highlands travels to South Oldham for a 7:30 p.m. contest Monday.

Soccer, Boys:
Highands 6, Campbell County 2:

The Bluebirds (3-3-1) knocked off the county rivals on Thursday at Tower Park.

Colin Dean scored a hat trick of three goals for Highlands. Teammates Chris Garbig, Jordan Jarvis and Devin DuPont scored the other three.

Nick Breslin again played the first half and recorded three saves for Highlands. Nathan Tippenhauer did not have to make any in the second half at goalkeeper for the Bluebirds.

Highlands returns to action Saturday at Pendleton County. Game time is 6 p.m.

NCC 3, North Hardin 2:

The Thoroughbreds (5-1-1) won their fourth straight with a road win Thursday.

Matt Tolle continued his scoring outburst with two goals and teammate Connor Hanneken scored the other one. Ben Tierney and Evan Brannon tallied assists for NewCath. Tolle has five goals in two games for the Thoroughbreds.

Paul Grosser made four saves for NewCath before leaving with an injury at halftime. Brian Anderson played goalkeeper in the second half and made five saves.

NewCath travels to defending 9th Region champion Boone County on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.

Volleyball:
Highlands 3, Bishop Brossart 2:

The Bluebirds (2-5) won their second straight contest Thursday over Bishop Brossart, 3-2 (25-18, 18-25, 25-27, 25-21, 15-13).

Jessica Ginter led Highlands with 16 kills and six blocks with Kaitlin Hall recording 37 assists and four aces. Abby Schweitzer followed with 26 digs.

Highlands plays in the September Slam Tournament on Saturday at Scott. One game is against Dixie Heights at 10 a.m. and another is against the hosts.

Boone County 3, NewCath 0:

The Thoroughbreds (3-4) dropped a 9th Region road contest Thursday in Florence by 25-20, 25-20, 25-14 scores. They are 2-2 in region play.

Keyaira Lankheit led NewCath with six kills with Rachel McDonald and Nikki Kiernan recording four each. Setter Alyssa Maier made 16 assists for the Thoroughbreds.

NewCath plays in the Louisville Invitational Volleyball Tournament at the Ohio Valley Volleyball Center starting Friday. The Thoroughbreds battle Walton (Georgia) at 6:30 p.m. and Kettering Alter (Ohio) at 8:30 p.m.
