Bluebirds Build Momentum for Post-Season
The Bluebirds handled the Villa Madonna Blue Lightning, 61-31 in Fort Thomas on Thursday for the Senior Night win. They honored seniors Robby Gabbard, Tyler Gulley, Griffin Huber, Jacob Noe, Carl Schoellman and Adam Uhlenbrock before the game.
"You always feel good about winning," said Kevin Listerman, Highlands Head Coach. "What I'm more concerned about is how we play and the energy we play with and I thought we had pretty good energy in practice. I thought we played, especially in the first half, with a really high focus and energy on the defensive end."
But the biggest accomplishment came in the form of moving to 13-13 on the season surpassing last year's total. The Bluebirds have not won that many games in a season since going 14-16 during the 2010-11 season.
"It's great. We've been preaching the process all season long and I think to get to this point, we've accomplished one of our goals," Schoellman said. "We're very happy with where we are right now, but we know we still have a week of work to go. We're going to do our best to make sure we can play basketball as long as we can for the rest of the season."
Schoellman and freshman guard Sam Vinson led the Bluebirds with nine points each. Highlands hit 24-of-54 shots for 44 percent including 9-of-24 three-point tries for 38 percent and 4-of-6 free throws for 67 percent.
Villa Madonna (14-15) made just 11-of-38 shots for 29 percent including 2-of-9 from three-point range for 22 percent and 7-of-13 free throws for 54 percent. Highlands also won the rebounding battle, 40-23. Gulley and Uhlenbrock led the Bluebirds with six rebounds each.
Highlands travels to Beechwood (16-12) on Friday. Game time is 8 p.m.
