It paid off in a big way. The Bluebirds recorded their first two extra-base hits of the season on their way to a 10-9 win over the Boone County Rebels (0-2) in 9th Region action at Thomas More College on Friday.
Seniors Kyle Rust and Trey Bowden led the way offensively for Highlands combining for half of the eight Bluebird hits. Rust went 2-for-2 with four runs scored, three stolen bases and a run batted in and Bowden went 2-for-3 with a triple, three RBI and two runs scored. Junior Joe Steiden added a double. Highlands took advantage of two Rebel errors and 12 walks.
"We felt we had much better approaches (Friday)," said Jeremy Baioni, Highlands Head Coach. "We swung at good pitches. That's what we're trying to get to. We know that you're not going to put up 10 hits every day. We were hitting the fastball. That's what we wanted to do and some guys got some timely hits."
Highlands trailed 4-1 after two but scored four in the bottom of the third to go up 5-4. The Rebels went up 9-6 in the fifth before the Bluebirds scored four in the bottom of the inning to make the final score.
Junior Ryan Adkins then shut out the Rebels in the final two innings to preserve the Highlands win. He allowed just one hit.
Senior Spencer Dee (1-0) picked up the win for Highlands pitching three innings. Highlands hit six batters and walked five in the victory to go with four strikeouts. But the Bluebirds played error-free defense behind the pitchers.
"We had some command issues, We walked some guys and they got some timely hits," Baioni said. "You have to tip your cap. We tell our guys all the time. You hit a batter here and you walk a batter there. All of a sudden they hit a ball in the gap or they get a base hit and score a run. There's nothing you can do at that point (but) just try to overcome those things. It was the first day the guys on the mound saw live hitters. It's just part of the process that we're going to have to get through. Hopefully, we'll get out there more on a regular basis and get into a routine."
Highlands travels to Simon Kenton for two games Saturday. The Bluebirds take on the Pioneers (4-1) at 11 a.m. before battling the West Carter Comets (3-0) at 1 p.m.
