NCC boys down Brossart; girls lose close one to SK

The Newport Central Catholic boys basketball team (24-2) reached 12 wins in a row for the second time this year with a 58-43 win at Bishop Brossart in Alexandria on Friday.

The Thoroughbreds again had balanced scoring. Michael Bueter led the way with 17 points with Drew McDonald scoring 15. Nick Seibert followed with nine and Zach Pangallo had eight. Bueter and Colin Dupont had one triple each for NewCath.

Alex Trentman led the Mustangs with 18 and Justin Saunders followed with 13. Bishop Brossart (20-5) also had two three-pointers.

Both teams shot free throws well. Bishop Brossart made 13-of-15 for 87 percent and NewCath hit 10-of-12 for 83 percent.

The Thoroughbreds led 24-16 at halftime.

NewCath travels to St. Henry (8-11) on Tuesday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Simon Kenton girls 51, NCC 50:

A furious rally in the fourth quarter came up short for the host Thoroughbreds (18-6).

The Thoroughbreds led 27-19 at halftime. But the Lady Pioneers outscored NewCath, 24-8 in the third quarter to go up 43-35 entering the fourth quarter. The Thoroughbreds had a shot blocked with eight seconds remaining.

Nikki Kiernan recorded her 14th double-double of the year with 15 points, 14 rebounds and six blocks. Alexus Mayes added 15 points to go with five rebounds.

Senior Paige Dosse caught fire for Simon Kenton in the third scoring 15 of her game-high 20 points on three three-pointers. Abbey Owings and Christina Cook followed with 13 and 11 respectively for the Lady Pioneers.

Free throws made all the difference in this game. NewCath made 9-of-16 for 56 percent and Simon Kenton hit 4-of-8 for 50 percent.

NewCath travels to Covington Holy Cross on Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
