The Newport
Central Catholic girls basketball team lost its third in a row Saturday.
The host
Holy Cross Lady Indians handed the Thoroughbreds a 56-44 defeat in the second
meeting between the two rivals located across the Licking River from each
other. NewCath (18-7) downed Holy Cross (18-5), 51-43 on Jan. 9 to open the All
“A” 9th Region Tournament on the Hill on its way to finishing All “A” State
Runner-Up.
NewCath
fell to 9-3 against 9th Region opponents. The Thoroughbreds had won eight in a
row prior to the losing streak.
Holy Cross
placed three players in double-digits. Abby Hassert led the way with 18 points.
Teammates Ally Mayhaus and DeAsia Beal followed with 14 and 11 respectively.
Nikki
Kiernan once again paced the Thoroughbreds with her 15th double-double of the
year. The junior standout had 15 points and 12 rebounds.
NewCath
will try to get back into the win column on Monday in another 9th Region
rematch against St. Henry (10-13) at home. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
