Bluebirds Win Third Straight

The Highlands Bluebirds baseball team (8-7 overall) had not recorded a shut-out since the season-opening 12-0 win at Walton-Verona.

But the second one of the season came Monday in Erlanger. Highlands outlasted the St. Henry Crusaders (6-8), 2-0 in eight innings. The Bluebirds improved to 4-2 in 9th Region action with the win.

Highlands scored twice in the top of the eighth to win the game. Ethan Kavanagh and Grant Summers scored the Bluebird runs with Ethan Doty and Joe Steiden batting them in.

Highlands junior Drew Rom recently verbally committed to the University of Michigan and followed that up with a four-hit complete game. He struck out 16 and walked none.

"It's always great to get the shut-out," said Jeremy Baioni, Highlands Head Coach. "Drew threw a fantastic game. He was efficient and really challenged hitters. Winning close games is important in preparation for the postseason."

Trey Bowden and Kavanagh both went 2-for-4 to lead Highlands. Kavanagh stole two bases. Steiden, Bowden and Kyle Rust added stolen bases.

Highlands battles Cincinnati Elder on Wednesday at Florence Freedom Park. Game time is 5 p.m.

Highlands JV, Freshman Teams also win:

The Highlands Junior Varsity baseball team improved to 10-1 with an 8-1 win over St. Henry. Steven Grimme allowed just one hit in six innings pitched for the Bluebirds and the freshman team beat Cincinnati St. Xaviers, 2-0 behind a strong outing from John Barth.
