The Highlands Ladybirds softball team (5-9-1 overall) snapped a six-game winless string with a 13-9 win at Mason County on Tuesday.

Highlands recorded 15 hits in the game to one for the Lady Royals. Sophomore Rachel Gabbard led the Ladybirds going 5-for-5 with a double and three runs batted in.

"Regardless what our record and our scores are, we are very close," said Rob Coffey, Highlands Head Coach. "We get better every game. We are to the mid-point of the season and we are looking to pull all the little things together that we have been working on all year."

Gracie Schlosser started the game on the mound for Highlands pitching into the sixth inning and striking out five. Junior Ella Griewe finished off the game.

"I feel that we got off to a rocky start and our record isn't great. But I feel like we've been able to come together as a team," said Josie Daley, Highlands junior. "As a team, we feel more confident in how we're playing. We always have this one inning where we kind of lose ourselves and let (opponents) score a bunch of runs. We need to overcome that obstacle."

Highlands takes on Newport on Thursday in a 36th District game. Game time is 5 p.m.
