The Highlands Bluebirds volleyball team (12-7 overall) had won eight straight district semifinal games entering Wednesday and did not let the hosts end that streak.
The Bluebirds added to the streak with 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-10) win over the host Dayton Lady Devils (14-7). Highlands takes on Newport Central Catholic (15-9) at 6 p.m. in the 36th District championship Thursday back at Dayton.
Highlands had 36 kills and assists, two solo blocks, 68 digs and 16 aces. Senior Laura Winkler led the way with 10 kills, 14 assists, nine digs and three aces. Junior CC Shick led the Bluebirds with 13 kills to go with five digs. Senior Maria Little had 17 assists, nine digs and five aces. Junior Sophia Sarakatsannis had two kills, a solo block, 15 digs and five aces. Junior Madison Clore had 14 digs, five assists and one ace. Junior Avery Cavacini had six kills and a solo block.
"I feel like we went in with a goal of ball control and transition offense and we executed that pretty well," said Katelyn Sallee, Highlands Head Coach. "It gives us a lot of motivation coming into (Thursday). We worked really hard this week on preparation in both the physical and the mental aspects of postseason play so we're excited and ready."
Highlands has won three consecutive district championships. But the Bluebirds lost 3-1 (25-23, 26-24, 16-25, 25-22) at NewCath on Oct. 3.
