Only two individual bowlers on either team qualified for state this year. They were Highlands seniors Gunner Gabbard and Jordan Cole.
Gabbard and Cole shot 603s to make it to the individual semifinals before shooting totals of 996 and 970 to make it to the stepladder round as second and fourth seeds.
In the first stepladder, Cole defeated the third seed in Pendleton County's Koby Brewer, 181-148 before Gabbard beat him, 194-192 in the next round. In the third round, Gabbard lost to top-seeded John Ivey from Simon Kenton, 193-161.
The boys state individual competition will be Feb. 7 at 11:30 a.m. at Executive Strike and Spare in Louisville.
In the team round, Highlands earned the fourth seed bowling a 974 and took on Scott in the second round. But the Eagles won 3-2 (145-135, 179-164, 114-201, 159-171, 184-166).
On the girls' side, Highlands bowled a 790 to earn the third seed. The Bluebirds lost 3-1 (165-136, 141-134, 92-112, 158-150) missing out on the state tournament for the first time since 2015.
In the individual tournament, two juniors made the semifinals. They were junior Abby Bach and Tessa Killen. Killen missed out in the stepladder round by seven pins shooting an 837 total.
In the 5th Region Unified Tournament, Highlands seniors Luke Laskey and Perry Daniel won the boys tournament to qualify for state defeating Pendleton County in the title game. On the girls' unified side, Highlands seniors Kaitlyn Gonzalez and Britney Sams made the semifinals.
Highlands graduates two seniors from the squad. They are Brittney Johnson and Nikki McKeirnon.
