Happy Senior Nights for Highlands Golf Teams

The Highlands golf teams celebrated their senior nights with victories.
The Highlands girls beat Covington Holy Cross, 208-263 to move to 8-0 in dual matches on the season at Highland Country Club. Sophomore Ellie Rowland earned medalist honors shooting a 44. The four Highlands seniors are Olivia Hopper, Marlena Auch, Gwen Culyer and Abigail Wira.

Highlands takes on Campbell County at AJ Jolly Golf Course in Alexandria on Wednesday. Tee time is 3:30 p.m.

The Highlands boys defeated Beechwood, 138-161 at Highland Country Club. The two sophomores in Justin Gabbard and Luke Muller led the way shooting 31 and 33 respectively. Seniors Ryan Leigh and Steven Grimme followed shooting 36 and 38 to round out the Bluebird scoring.

Senior Brady Walz and sophomore Isaiah Lampkin also participated. Walz shot a 40 and Lampkin shot a 44.

"The weather was cool and the greens were soft," said Bert Richey, Highlands Head Coach. "It was easy to get the ball to stop. That's the first time (this season) the varsity has played there and they all played well. I was happy for the seniors. They're a really good group. They do an awesome job of mentoring and leading the younger kids and showing them the right way to do things and proper etiquette."

Highlands takes on Bishop Brossart on Thursday at AJ Jolly Golf Course in Alexandria. Tee time is 3:30 p.m.

Soccer, Girls:
Louisville Assumption 1, Highlands 0:

The Rockets (7-2-1) scored in the last minutes to hand the Bluebirds (7-2) their first loss in the opening round of the Lexington Catholic Challenge Cup since 2014. Highlands last won this prestigious tournament in 2006.

Highlands recorded 10 shots including five on goal. Assumption had 11 shots including seven on goal. Junior goalkeeper Maggie Hinegardner had six saves.

Highlands had six fouls and two corner kicks. Assumption had nine fouls and one corner kick.

The Bluebirds face Louisville DuPont Manual (8-2-1) on Wednesday at 6 p.m. back at Lexington Catholic.
