Good Opener for Bluebirds
Highlands won 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-11). Bishop Brossart has a new head coach in Bree Popham. Popham is a 2009 Notre Dame alum who served on the Pandas' staff as an assistant the past two years.
"We were really anxious to get out there (Monday)," said Katelyn Sallee, Highlands Head Coach. "We had a great into weekend at Bluegrass (State Games in Lexington) to knock off some of the nerves and get in rhythm together. I think (Monday) was a step in the right direction. I don't think we played as comfortable as I'd like to see us, which we have a lot more matches this week even just to kind of get going."
Highlands is mixing a combination of experienced players and young talent with the return of four starters. Junior Audrey Graves had 31 assists and 11 digs to lead the Bluebirds and junior Ava Hockney had seven kills. But freshman CC Shick had a huge varsity debut with a team-high eight kills.
"We did a lot of team bonding this year. We had the annual team lock-in up at the gym," said Casey Dunn, Highlands junior. "We got to know (the new players) as people and how they play the game. We've also been practicing a lot. We're really getting to know them personally and as an athlete. I think that really helps us trust them as a player."
Highlands travels to Beechwood on Tuesday. Game time is 7 p.m. Like Highlands, Beechwood also made the 9th Region semifinals last year.
