The Highlands Ladybirds basketball team (2-2 overall) saw more improvements on their weaknesses in a 55-39 road win over the Walton-Verona Bearcats (4-1).

Highlands guards Zoie Barth and Jenna Martin again had big games. Barth made 4-of-9 three-pointers on her way to 23 points and had seven rebounds. Martin had 12 points and five steals. Senior Lauren Epperson followed with 10 points and eight rebounds.

Highlands made 18-of-54 shots for 33 percent including 7-of-23 from three-point range for 30 percent compared to 15-of-43 for 35 percent overall including 4-of-15 from downtown for 27 percent for Walton-Verona. The Ladybirds made 12-of-20 free throws for 60 percent compared to 5-of-13 for Walton-Verona for 39 percent.

"We want back to our old defense," Epperson said. "We worked on our help side defense. We were switching at the beginning of the year. That improved (Thursday)."

Walton-Verona turned the ball over 20 times compared to seven for Highlands. The Ladybirds recorded 14 steals to three for the Bearcats.

The Bearcats saw two players reach double figures. They were Brooke Perry with 15 and Rachel Lehkamp with 11.
