Highlands Rallies Past Simon Kenton

Bluebirds Have Won Four Straight

The Highlands Bluebirds baseball team (23-8 overall) rallied past the Simon Kenton Pioneers (15-10), 6-4 in Independence on Friday. Highlands has won four in a row.

Highlands scored four runs in the top of the fifth to go up 5-4. Senior Trey Gabbard put the Bluebirds up for good with a two-run home run. Gabbard went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in and a run scored.

"The coaches told us we need to find a way to win. Just keep working," Gabbard said. "Just do whatever it takes. The first pitch (the SK pitcher) threw me was a fastball belt-high. I knew what to do with it."

Highlands hit just .240 (6-for-25) in the win compared to .321 (9-for-28) for Simon Kenton. But the Bluebirds capitalized on seven walks and two Pioneer errors. Highlands had just one error and walked four Simon Kenton batters. Both teams left eight runners on base.

Senior Cooper Schwalbach added a double for Highlands. Senior Bryce Ziegler had two RBI and junior Ethan Kavanagh scored twice.

Senior Steven Grimme (3-2) pitched the first four innings to pick up the win for the Bluebirds. Grimme struck out three. Senior Nolan Turner threw the final three innings striking out two to record his fourth save of the year.

Highlands concluded the regular season with four home games. The Bluebirds take on Cooper on Monday at 5 p.m.
