Highlands takes both games at Simon Kenton |

To start the day, the Highlands Bluebirds baseball team (4-0 overall) edged the host Simon Kenton Pioneers, 3-2 then run-ruled the West Carter Comets, 13-0 in five innings. West Carter is in the 16th Region located west of Ashland.
"It's a really good sign when you win back-to-back close games," said Jeremy Baioni, Highlands Head Coach. "Timely hitting, pitching and defense will be key in the postseason. It's also nice to see the guys get into a rhythm offensively after playing a few games this week. We have had a lot of guys contribute in those games and that's a great sign for our depth."
Senior pitcher Ethan Doty (2-0) threw a complete game for Highlands against the Pioneers (5-2). Doty struck out 11, walked none and allowed just five hits including two to senior Trent Kincaid. The Bluebirds overcame two errors defensively and the Pioneers had one.
Highlands had just four hits and three walks. But the Bluebirds made the most of them starting in the top of the fifth. Senior Brady Gosney belted a two-run home run off Kyle Taylor scoring freshman Ethan Kavanagh in front of him. Bryce Ziegler added a double for Highlands with Kavanagh and Doty recording singles.
"It was just the face that he threw a good pitch and I put a good swing on it," Gosney said. "It doesn't get much simpler than that."
But Simon Kenton came back and tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. Senior Hunter Faehr hit a two-run double.
Highlands scored the game-winning run in the top of the sixth. Senior Kyle Rust scored it.
In the second game against the Comets (3-2), the Bluebirds scored nine runs in the first inning and never looked back. They added four more in the third.
Junior Drew Rom (1-0) threw the first four innings striking out 10 and sophomore Grady Kramer pitched the fifth inning striking out two. They allowed a combined six hits. Neither team committed any errors.
Rom went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and three runs batted in. Ziegler went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored to lead Highlands offensively. Cramer, Kavanagh, Ryan Adkins and Trey Bowden added doubles for the Bluebirds.
Highlands returns to 9th Region action Tuesday. The Cooper Jaguars (0-3) come to Highland Park for a 5 p.m. contest.
