Tuesday Briefs: Highlands soccer handles Boone County

The Highlands Bluebird soccer team found itself on the positive end of a 7-0 final just three days after experiencing the opposite.

The Bluebirds moved to 2-1-1 overall and 2-0-1 in 9th Region action with a victory by that score over the Boone County Rebels (0-4) at Tower Park after Louisville Trinity won at Tower Park by that score on Saturday. Highlands has beaten Boone County two straight times since the Rebels eliminated the Bluebirds in the 9th Region quarterfinals in 2014.

Highlands senior goalkeepers Paul Tully and Simon Frink combined for the third shutout of the year for the Bluebirds. Tully had three saves and Frink had none. Highlands has outscored opponents, 8-7 on the season.

Senior forward Collin Ginter and junior forward/midfielder Brandon Zachary scored twice for the Bluebirds. Junior midfielder Drew Rom scored a goal and had an assist. Seniors Tommy Browe and Solomon Farris scored the other two goals with junior Nick Gish and senior Colton Dolezal adding one assist each.

Highlands hits the road for the first time Thursday after opening the season with four home games. The Bluebirds travel to Pendery Park to battle the Bishop Brossart Mustangs (0-3) on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Volleyball:
Cooper 3, Highlands 0:

The Ladybirds lost another 9th Region game in three straight games by 25-16, 25-13, 25-22 scores in Union. Cooper (1-1) finished region runner-up last year and nearly knocked off region power Notre Dame on Aug.18 taking the Pandas to a fifth game before losing.

Highlands plays host to Kings (Ohio) on Thursday. Game time is 6 p.m.
