Thursday Briefs: Herman makes state round of 16, HHS softball, baseball resume action

The Highlands Ladybirds softball team (19-10 overall) took down the Dayton. Lady Devils, 10-0 in six innings on Senior Day. Highlands moved to 13-0 in 9th Region action as a result and finished 4-0 in 36th District seed play.

The Ladybirds pounded out 11 hits in the victory to four for the Lady Devils. Haley Coffey, Brennah Dutcher and Zoie Barth had two hits each. Dutcher homered, doubled, drove in four runs and scored three runs. Haley Coffey and Shelby Graybill doubled for Highlands. Rachel Gabbard drove in two runs and Morgan Coffey scored twice.

Bailey Spencer threw another gem on the mound striking out eight and walking none. Highlands made one error defensively to two for Dayton.

Highlands travels to Conner on Friday for the final game of the regular season. Game time is 5 p.m. in Hebron.

State Tennis Tournament:
Herman advances to singles round of 16:

Highlands senior Lexi Herman advanced to the girls singles round of 16 with two victories Thursday. She beat East Jessamine junior Casey Kibler, 6-1, 6-1 before beating Mason County sophomore Tessa Gray, 6-1, 6-2 in the second round. Herman faces Ashland Blazer senior Lauren Fazenbaker at 8 a.m. Friday.

Highlands senior Sarah Hoffmann also won her first match over Hopkinsville senior Zena Maddux, 6-3, 6-0. But she lost to Dixie Heights senior Brooke Warden in the second round, 6-1, 6-1.

Neither Ladybird doubles team made it past the first round. Highlands seniors Lauren Auteri and Lacey Pohlman lost to Boyle County senior Bailey Pierson and junior Anna Duncan, 6-4, 6-4 and the tandem of sophomore Brooke Hodory and freshman Mia Smith lost to Corbin senior Jaclyn Jewell and sophomore Ellie Jane Carloftis, 6-1, 6-0.

In boys singles, Highlands senior Ben Emery beat John Hardin junior, 6-0, 6-0. But he met the second seed in the next round in Louisville St. Xavier sophomore Alex Wesbrooks and lost 6-0, 6-0.

The Highlands doubles team of junior Jeffrey Schenk and seventh-grader Peter Laskey beat Knott County Central senior Dylan Craft and sophomore Tate Craft, 6-0, 6-0. But they lost to Conner seniors Nathan Eberhard and Nick Elleman, 6-1, 6-1 in the next round.

The round of 16 and quarterfinals take place Friday.

Baseball:
Scott 5, Highlands 1:

The Bluebirds (18-17 overall) lost the battle of defending region champions at Highland Park.

Scott outhit Highlands, 6-3. Brady Gosney led the Bluebirds with a double. The Eagles scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back.

Drew Rom (2-4) took the pitching loss throwing six innings for Highlands. He struck out 11 and walked one.

Highlands plays host to Conner on Friday. Game time is 5 p.m.
