Tuesday Sports Briefs

The Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds softball team continued to roll Tuesday.

NewCath (10-3) won its seventh in a row with a 3-2 9th Region win over the Dixie Heights Lady Colonels. The Thoroughbreds outhit the Lady Colonels, 5-2 and committed just one error to three for the hosts.

Freshman Haley Meyers (9-1) picked up the pitching win for NewCath. Catcher Kristen Schreiber and shortstop Taylor Burkart made defensive gems behind her.

The Thoroughbreds scored first in the fourth inning. Morgan Martin singled and moved to third on consecutive ground outs before scoring on a passed ball.

After Dixie Heights scored twice in the bottom of the inning, NewCath scored twice in the fifth for the game-winning runs. Meyers singled to center and moved to third on an error. Meyers then scored when Casey Kohls hit a sacrifice fly to left. Schreiber thin hit a run batted in double for the game-winner.

NewCath travels to Lloyd Memorial on Thursday. Game time is 5:30 p.m.

Softball:
North Central (Ind.) 8, Highlands 6:

The Ladybirds (8-11) dropped their seventh in a row Tuesday. They also fell to 0-5 against non-Kentucky opponents.

Baseball:
Cincinnati McNicholas 7, Newport Central Catholic 3:

The Thoroughbreds dropped their fifth in a row with the home loss Tuesday.

The Rockets outhit the Thoroughbreds, 9-4. Kole Zenni led NewCath going 2-for-3 with a run batted in and run scored. Spencer Pangallo followed with a double for NewCath.
