Tuesday Volleyball Briefs

The Highlands Bluebirds volleyball team dropped its season-opener Tuesday to the Simon Kenton Lady Pioneers.

A.J. Guth led Highlands with 12 digs and Anna Marie Houliston had three blocks. The Bluebirds played without standout hitter Jessica Ginter.

Highlands returns home to face Cincinnati Anderson at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Volleyball:
Newport Central Catholic 3, Bellevue 0:

The Thoroughbreds downed the Lady Tigers, 3-0 (25-6, 25-9, 25-17) to open 36th District action and move to 1-1 on the young season.

Rachel McDonald and Nikki Kiernan led the Thoroughbreds with eight kills each and Keyaira Lankheit followed with seven kills. Teammates Madison Volk had six digs and Laura Brannon tallied five aces.

NewCath travels to Cincinnati Mercy on Thursday to face Mercy and Lexington Henry Clay. Game times are 5 and 6 p.m.
