Wednesday Highlands Round-Up

Highlands Baseball Takes Care of Ohio Visitors

The Highlands Bluebirds welcomed in the Canal Winchester (Ohio) Indians located just southeast of Columbus to town Wednesday for non-region action.

Highlands saw junior Ethan Kavanagh lead off the game with a home run. The Bluebirds then scored three more in the bottom of the fourth on their way to a 4-1 victory to move to 4-1 on the season.

Sophomore Jake Gulley picked up the win for Highlands. He struck out five and allowed one hit.

"We pitched well then we defended well behind our pitchers," said Jeremy Baioni, Highlands Head Coach. "We had some strikeouts. But we challenged the hitters and our guys made the routine plays - what we've always preached. Then offensively, we put a few hits together. We took some really good swings, had some really good approaches. We just missed a few here and there. All in all, I felt we played pretty well."

Senior Trent Johnson singled with one out in that fourth inning and senior Cooper Schwalbach doubled him to third before Grady Cramer singled home Johnson. Schwalbach then scored on a wild pitch. Cramer eventually scored.

"(The Canal Winchester pitcher) was predominantly throwing fastballs so we were hunting fastballs," Johnson said. "He was sitting pretty steady the whole game. In the first couple innings, we were kind of slow. As a team, we didn't hit him that well at the beginning of the game. Once we saw him two, three times is when we started to get the bats going."

The Bluebirds batted .240 (6-for-25) for the game. Schwalbach went 2-for-2 with two doubles and a run scored to lead Highlands.
