Conner Ends Highlands Winning Streak

Bluebirds fall to 1-4 Against 33rd District

 The winning streak started after a loss to a 33rd District squad and ended the next time another one took the floor with the Highlands Bluebirds girls basketball team.
Highlands (19-7 overall) hoped to conclude the regular season without a loss at home. But the Conner Lady Cougars (18-7) came to Fort Thomas and beat the Bluebirds, 67-60 on a night the Bluebirds honored their lone senior in guard Brooke Dill.

The Bluebirds had won eight in a row dating back to a 59-44 loss at Cooper on Jan. 9. They are 9-4 in 9th Region action including a 1-4 mark against 33rd District teams. Highlands also lost at Conner, 51-41 on Dec. 29 in the championship game of the LaRosa's Holiday Classic.

Conner shot well from the floor led by 22 points from junior guard Courtney Hurst. Hurst made 8-of-11 shots including 4-of-7 from three-point range. Junior guard Joy Strange followed with 10 points and junior forward Maddie Burcham had nine.

Highlands junior guard Zoie Barth put in another outstanding game with 25 points making 18-of-19 free throws to go with five rebounds, an assist and a steal. Junior forward Hanna Buecker followed with 14 points and junior guard Chloe Jansen nearly had a double-double with 10 points, nine rebounds and three assists.

Conner made 25-of-46 shots for 54 percent including 8-of-22 from three-point range for 36 percent. Highlands hit 16-of-48 shots for 33 percent including 3-of-21 three-point tries for 14 percent..

Highlands shot much better at the free-throw line making 25-of-30 for 83 percent compared to 9-of-19 for 47 percent for the Lady Cougars. Highlands had 19 fouls compared to 22 for Conner and won the rebounding battle, 31-28.

Conner had double the assists of Highlands, 12-6. Strange, Hurst, senior guard Madi Mclemore, senior power forward Blair Kennedy and sophomore center Maddie Drummonds had two each.

Highlands travels to Boone County (7-19) on Saturday. Game time is 2:30 p.m.
