Ladybird Volleyball Records First Win

The Highlands Ladybirds volleyball team moved to 1-1 on the season with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-13) win over host Campbell County on Thursday.

Sophomore Casey Dunn led the way with eight kills, 19 digs and three aces. Ava Hockney also had eight kills and Maddie McCoy had seven. Gracie Schweitzer added 21 digs and Margot Seidel had 17 with setter Audrey Graves recording 28 assists.

"It's about building on confidence, seeing what our strengths are and not being afraid to go into a match full steam," said Katelyn Sallee, Highlands Head Coach. "We served really well. We controlled the match about midway in the first set throughout the rest of the match. We had a lot of control on defense, which allowed us to be super aggressive offensively and didn't really give them an opportunity to come in. That's what we talk about all year. Play fast. Play hard and don't give teams chances. If we can do that then you're going to win more games."

Sallee credited the team for making a huge adjustment during the match. Highlands had success attacking from outside to start the game. But once Campbell County put a right side blocker on the outside, Highlands adjusted setting the middle.

"It's really nice that we have players that are really versatile," Graves said. "They can hit whenever and wherever they need to. I know I can count on each and every one of them to put the ball down on the court. That's big for Highlands."

Highlands takes on Newport Central Catholic on Tuesday in 36th District action. Game time is 7 p.m.

Soccer Game Cancelled:

The Highlands Bluebirds (1-0) were scheduled to play at Beechwood on Thursday. But lightning kept the teams off the field resulting in a cancellation. Highlands Head Coach Chad Niedert said the teams are hoping to reschedule the game.

Highlands faces Covington Holmes on Tuesday at Tower Park. Game time is 7 p.m.
