Ladybirds record first district win of season

The Highlands Ladybirds basketball team (2-1 overall) recorded its first 36th District win of the season with a 57-22 decision over the Dayton Lady Devils (3-1) Wednesday at Highlands Middle School.

Highlands saw 14 different players see action including the return of veteran senior starting point guard Haley Coffey from a wrist injury suffered in the offseason. The Ladybirds made 22-of-47 shots for 47 percent including 5-of-16 from three-point range for 31 percent and 8-of-12 free throws for 67 percent.

Highlands outscored Dayton, 1.21-.48 in points per possession. Dayton made just 6-of-25 shots for 24 percent including 3-of-8 for 38 percent from three-point range. The Lady Devils also made just 7-of-14 free-throw tries for 50 percent. Kilee Donelan led them with six points.

The Ladybirds saw freshman Zoie Barth lead the way with 11 points and senior center McKenzie Leigh score 10. Senior Izzy Schultz added eight points. Barth also had four rebounds and four assists. Coffey and Leigh also had four rebounds each.

Highlands held Dayton to just two points in the second quarter. The Ladybirds led 39-10 at halftime.

The Ladybirds play host to Grant County on Friday. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at the Highlands Middle School.
