Saturday Sports Briefs

The Highlands Ladybirds softball team capped off a great week with a huge win Saturday.

Highlands (13-11) ventured across the Ohio River and beat Cincinnati Turpin, 1-0. The Ladybirds have won five in a row and beat a non-Kentucky opponent for the first time in five tries this year.

Highlands scored the game’s only run in the top of the sixth inning. Haley Coffey hit Peyton Leighty home from third.

Bailey Spencer pitched a gem for Highlands. She struck out nine in the complete game.

Highlands takes on Dayton in 36th District action Tuesday. Game time is 5 p.m. at Winkler Field.

Softball:
Newport Central Catholic 6, Newport 2:

The Thoroughbreds (15-7) finished 3-1 in 36th District action with a road win Saturday.

NewCath outhit the Lady Wildcats, 13-3. Morgan Martini finished 3-for-3 with a double to lead the Thoroughbreds and Loren Zimmerman went 3-for-4 with a run batted in. Taylor Burkart and Michaela Ware followed going 2-for-4 with an RBI each. Ware and Casey Kohls had doubles.

Haley Meyers started the game on the mound for NewCath before Sarah Neace took over with one out in the third. Neace finished the game and struck out eight to pick up the win.

NewCath travels to Covington Holmes on Tuesday. Game time is 4:30 p.m.

Baseball:
Highlands drops two:

The Bluebirds fell to 14-12 following a 7-4 loss to Covington Catholic and 9-0 defeat to Cincinnati Moeller on Saturday in Fort Thomas.

Highlands takes on Dixie Heights on Monday. Game time is 5 p.m.

Conner 10, Newport Central Catholic 0:

The Thoroughbreds (8-19) lost in five innings Saturday. This marks the 12th defeat in 13 games for NewCath.

The Throughbreds face Covington Catholic on Monday. Game time is 5 p.m.
