NewCath girls dominate Villa Madonna

The Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds girls basketball team had no problems in the opener of the All “A” 9th Region tournament Monday on The Hill.

NewCath (14-2) pounded the overmatched Villa Madonna Blue Lightning (7-6) by a 51-29 count. The Thoroughbreds have won the last seven All “A” region crowns.

NewCath led 48-12 after three quarters to start the running clock. The Thoroughbreds won with Nikki Kiernan resting and Alexus Mayes only playing one quarter.

Ansley Davenport led NewCath with 13 points on one three-pointer to go with a game-high five rebounds. Teammate Loren Zimmerman followed with eight.

Alex Hengge led Villa Madonna with 11 points.

NewCath battles Heritage Academy (3-6) in the region quarterfinals on Wednesday at St. Henry. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
