Thursday Sports Briefs

The Highlands Bluebirds boys soccer team has been celebrating a lot lately.

The Bluebirds won for the 10th time in 12 games Thursday, 3-1 over the Cincinnati LaSalle Lancers. Highlands (12-5-1) finished the year 1-1 against teams from Cincinnati.

Colin Dean, Jordan Jarvis and Vadim Lightner scored the goals for Highlands. Senior goalkeeper Nathan Tippenhauer played the entire game and made 12 saves.

Highlands has two games left this season. The Bluebirds play host to Cooper on Tuesday. Game time is 8 p.m.

Soccer, Boys:
Woodford County 4, NCC 2

The Thoroughbreds dropped a road decision Thursday.

They lost for the first time in four games dropping to 10-4-1 on the year.

Jacob Hensley and Noah Connolly scored the goals for NewCath. Teammates Matt Tolle had an assist and goalkeeper Paul Grosser recorded 11 saves.

NewCath concludes the regular season on Saturday. The Thoroughbreds travel to St. Henry for a 4 p.m. contest.

Volleyball:
Highlands 3, Bellevue 0:

The Bluebirds improved to 10-18 overall and 3-0 in District 36 action with another win Thursday at Bellevue by 25-7, 25-13, 25-16 scores.

Jessica Ginter made her return from injury and had 11 kills. Abby Schweitzer recorded 15 digs and four aces with Kaitlin Hall tallying 29 assists.

Highlands plays host to Newport Central Catholic on Monday in a key district contest. Game time is 7:30 p.m. in Fort Thomas.

Cooper 3, Newport Central Catholic 1:

The Lady Jaguars beat the Thoroughbreds, 3-1 (15-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-21) in a crucial 9th Region contest Thursday.

Alyssa Maier led NewCath with 33 assists. The kill leaders were Rachel McDonald, Keyaira Lankheit and Nikki Kiernan with 10, nine and eight respectively. McDonald also had 15 digs.

Soccer, Girls:
Highlands 0, St. Henry 0:

The two 9th Region powers battled to a 0-0 deadlock on Thursday in Erlanger.

Sarah Owen stopped all three Lady Crusader shots for Highlands. The Bluebirds are 4-6-4 on the year.

Highlands travels to Boyle County on Saturday. Game time is 7 p.m.

Notre Dame 3, NewCath 2:

The Lady Breds (12-2-2) lost for the first time in 14 games in the rematch of last year’s 2012 9th Region championship.

Loren Zimmerman and Sam Bunzel scored the goals for NewCath. Bunzel scored her goal on a corner kick and assisted Zimmerman on another corner kick. NewCath goalkeeper Meg Martin recorded five saves.

NewCath plays host to Conner on Saturday. Game time is 6 p.m.
